This recording of a great Royal Opera House production is well worth seeing, coming up soon on Perth Playhouse’s digital screen. There are two performances, on Sunday October 3rd at 3pm and at a further time to be announced – the performance on Thursday 7th October at 7.30pm has been postponed for technical reasons. Donizetti’s delightful opera stems from 1840, and this production stars Natalie Dessay in a role she made her own. This production when originally staged quickly sold out and was recorded in 2010.
The small character role of the butler Hortensio is taken by an expert scene-stealer – the Perth-born baritone Donald Maxwell. Donald must be well known to all in Scotland and now sings all over the world. He played this particular role at the New York Met before appearing in it at Covent Garden
The cast also includes Juan Diego Flórez, while Alessandro Corbelli and Felicity Palmer take on two great character roles in the formidable sergeant and the haughty aristocrat, conducted by Bruno Campanella. Also starring Dawn French as La Duchesse de Crackentorp.
