Opera Scotland

May 2013 Additions

Posted 5 Jun 2013

We have continued to add listings (something we usually forget to mention in our monthly review).

We have also been working with Scottish Opera, helping with their master list of past performances to resolve a few discrepancies. In particular, we've been able to identify some venues more precisely.  Watch out for their exciting new book commemorating fifty years of Scottish Opera!

A biography has been added for Thomas Hemsley, who died recently.  Notes have also been included for Belshazzar (Handel) and Saul (Handel).

Dates and venues have been added for a great number of tours, past, present and future. Additions this month include Albert Herring (1969); American Lulu (2013); Barber of Seville (1997); Belshazzar (1997); Bohème (1995); Cinderella (1971); Cosi fan tutte (1992, 1996, 2013); Damnation of Faust (1923, 1939, 2008); Don Giovanni (2013); Don Pasquale (2014); Elegy for Young Lovers (1975), HMS Pinafore (1990); Madama Butterfly (2007, 2014); Marriage of Figaro (1980); Martha (1970); Merry Wives of Windsor (2013); Orfeo ed Euridice (1994); Pirates of Penzance (1990; 2013); Rodelinda (2013); Saul (1999); Siege of Calais (2013); Simon Boccanegra (2013); Traviata (1970; 1971); Trial by Jury (1990); Turandot (2014), and Turn of the Screw (1975).

Since we set out to retrieve the performance history of opera in Scotland - and working on the most modest of budgets - we've obtained photographs, programmes and newspaper images of different types. We are very grateful too to all who have assisted with generous gifts of material for our archives. As result, the collection has been developing slowly and steadily. We're particularly pleased with this drawing from 1878 of Aynsley Cook as Falstaff. What do you think?
