Background

The Dollar Princess remained the most successful of Fall's operettas, and swept round Europe in a matter of months, almost as popular as The Merry Widow . George Edwardes quickly put it on in English translation, opening his provincial tour in Manchester on Christmas Eve 1908. It did not reach his London base at Daly's Theatre until 25 September 1909. His translators were the practised team of Basil Hood (book) and Adrian Ross (lyrics). By the autumn of 1912 George Edwardes had a company on the road that divided its time between the two great successes, playing The Merry Widow for one half of the week and The Dollar Princess for the other.
