Background

Rather like the Thea Musgrave Mary, Queen of Scots, premiered at the 1977 Festival, much of the action in Slonimsky's opera takes during Mary's brief reign in Edinburgh. It follows her love affairs and marriages, her quarrel with John Knox, murder and treachery, her flight to England and eventual execution.
