Background

Dvořák had accepted an invitation to visit the USA in 1892, and before leaving Prague prepared a work to be premiered on his arrival. His Te Deum for two soloists (soprano and bass), chorus and orchestra, was duly launched with great success at Carnegie Hall. He conducted the performance, with soloists Clementine de Vere and Emil Fischer.

The soprano would soon spend several seasons at the Met before moving to Europe, where she was a leading soprano with the Moody-Manners company in Britain as well as working on the continent.

The London premiere was under the baton of George Henschel. He was a highly reputable conductor, who took charge of the Scottish Orchestra for several years. As an excellent baritone he was also known to sing while conducting the performance.
