Opera Camerata

Opera Camerata was founded in 1983 under the name of “Sinfonia Opera” by Neil & Inga Mantle. The company’s aim was, and still is, to put on productions of small-scale operas suitable for the Church Hill Theatre, Edinburgh. It’s first production was Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Alison Rushworth took over from Neil Mantle as Musical Director in 1988. The first production under her baton, so to speak, was Handel’s Agrippina, and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Alison has remained MD. ever since – except for one year when Vaughan Townhill took over.

Productions to date include: Mozart (Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, La Clemenza di Tito); Smetana (The Bartered Bride); Verdi (Falstaff); Humperdinck (Hansel and Gretel); Nicolai (The Merry Wives of Windsor); Offenbach (The Tales of Hoffmann, La Belle Hélène, La Vie Parisienne); Puccini (Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi); Bizet (Carmen, Pearl Fishers); Weber (Der Freischütz); Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Leoncavallo (Pagliacci).

The Opera Camerata chorus has sung in several concerts with Philomusica of Edinburgh
