The Edinburgh Concert Society was in its second (and last) season of operations. It was clearly an adventurous body, willing to ex[eriment with musical novelties. Sadly these did not get the level of audience support required to let the Society flourish.
Belshazzar's Feast had ben commissioned and premiered by the Leeds Triennial Festival in October 1931, under the baton of Dr Malcolm Sargent. This Scottish premiere was therefore quite quick to follow up the launch.
