At a time when the Cold War was at its chilliest - the period of the Cuban Missile Crisis - for the Edinburgh Festival to import productions of unfamiliar Russian repertoire was almost unthinkable. However the Tito regime in Yugoslavia still kept communications open, and here brought four of them. There was a further treat, as one of their star basses had also recently had a great success as Don Quixote in the late Massenet work, here receiving a welcome Scottish premiere.
