Prior to the First World War, Gianni Vagnetti studied Engineering, but afterwards turned to painting and design. Later he taught in Florence, at both the Institute of Art and the Accademia di Belle Arte.
As a stage designer he made his debut in 1935 at Amsterdam (La sonnambula). He also designed for La Scala, Milan and the Rome Opera. At the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, his operatic designs included Rossini (Armida, La cenerentola) and Verdi (La traviata).
