Alexandra Zabala studied at the National University of Colombia before training at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin. She also studied in Bologna with Geneviève Ians and with Paolo Washington. She was a finalist in the 1995 Luciano Pavarotti competition in Philadelphia.
Operatic appearances throughout Italy include: Macerata (Lauro Rossi's Cleopatra); Venice (Laodice in Porpora's Mitridate); Merano (Countess Almaviva); Pesaro (Corinna Il viaggio a Reims); Reggio Calabria (Countess); Novara (Venus Orphée aux enfers, Corinna, Aïda); Perugia (Costanza in Vivaldi's Griselda) and Bibbiena (Costanza, Tamiri in Porpora's Semiramide riconosciuta, Galatea in Porpora's Polifemo).
She has also sung in Bogotà (Musetta); Valladolid (Moreno Torroba's Luisa Fernanda with Plácido Domingo); Bayreuth Opernhaus (Anaide Mosè in Egitto, Amenaide Tancredi).
Her British debut was in Macbeth with the Teatro Regio Torino at the 2017 Edinburgh International Festival. She returns to sing Aïda with Opera North.
