Stefan Herheim studied cello and voice before establishing a puppet company that toured Norway. In 1994 he entered the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, studying opera direction under Götz Friedrich. He has been named Director of the Year three times by Opernwelt and directs and teaches throughout Europe.
His stagings include Oslo (Giulio Cesare, La cenerentola, Tannhäuser, La bohème, Salome, Lulu); Stockholm (Così fan tutte); Copenhagen (Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Salome, Lulu); Amsterdam (Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades); Brussels (Rusalka); Berlin (Serse, Lohengrin, La forza del destino); Hamburg (Le nozze di Figaro); Essen (Don Giovanni); Stuttgart (Der Rosenkavalier); Dresden (Rusalka, Lulu); Bayreuth (Parsifal); Salzburg (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Salome); Vienna, (Madama Butterfly); Bregenz (Les Contes d'Hoffmann); Graz (Carmen, Rusalka); Paris (Die Meistersinger); Lyon (La cenerentola, Rusalka); Barcelona (Rusalka).
In Britain, his work has been seen at Covent Garden (Les Vêpres siciliennes) and Glyndebourne (Pelléas et Mélisande).
