Swiss soprano.
Edith Mathis had a notable career in the major European houses, specialising in the works of Mozart and Strauss.
Mathis studied in Zürich, making her debut at Lucerne as Second Boy Die Zauberflöte. For four years from 1959 she was based at the Cologne Opera. From 1963 to 1966 her base was at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, where Mathis created the role of Luise Der junge Lord (Henze 1965)..
As a freelance, subsequently Mathis worked with the opera companies in Hamburg, Vienna, Munich and the Salzburg Festival as well as the New York Met.
Operatic appearances in Britain included Glyndebourne (Cherubino, Sophie Der Rosenkavalier) and Covent Garden (Sophie).
