English baritone, director and teacher.

Clive Carey trained in London at the Royal College of Music and with Jean de Reszke. He came to prominence in 1911, when the new Dent translation of The Magic Flute was launched at Cambridge, with Carey as Papageno. He was a leading member of Lilian Baylis's opera company at the Old Vic. He directed and appeared in The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute. He later joined the touring company that performed The Beggar's Opera in the USA and Canada. He played Macheath.

He directed operas at Sadler's Wells (after the Baylis company had relocated) and ran the company 1945-6.

His teaching work was divided between Australia and Britain. He was Professor of Singing at Adelaide 1924-8 and again 1939. He taught at Melbourne 1943-5. In London 1946-53 he was Professor of Singing and director of Opera back at the RCM, where his students included David Ward.
