Dame Clara Butt.

Born Southwick,  Sussex,  1 February 1873,

Died North Stoke, 23 January 1936.

English contralto.

Dame Clara Butt had a lengthy concert career of enormous popularity, having a majestic contralto voice of huge power.

Butt studied with Cyril Rootham in Bristol before continuing her training in London, at the Royal College of Music.

Butt was unusually tall and so performed very little opera. Her only role was Gluck's Orfeo, which she sang as a student in 1892 at the Lyceum Theatre. She repeated the part at Covent Garden in 1920 under Beecham.
