Clay Hilley was born in Georgia and studied at the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. He subsequently attended the Manhattan School of Music and the Opera Institute at Boston University.
His operatic engagements include Bayreuth (Siegfried Götterdämmerung); Berlin Deutsche Oper (Siegfried Siegfried & Götterdämmerung, Tristan); Tiroler Festspiele Erl (Siegmund); Salzburg (Idomeneo); Baden-Baden (Emperor Die Frau ohne Schatten); St Gallen (Phoebus in Schmidt's Notre Dame); Würzburg (Idomeneo).
Appearances in the USA include New York Met (Drum-Major Wozzeck); Chicago (Grenville Dead Man Walking); Bard Music Festival (Title-role Dimitrij).
In Britain he has appeared twice at the Edinburgh International Festival. At the Royal Opera Covent Garden his debut is as the Drum-Major.
His concert repertoire includes Mahler's 8th Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde.
