Dame Gwen Frangcon Davies (DBE 1991).

Gwen Frangcon Davies was the daughter of a famous Welsh bass of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.  She began her career in 1911 as a soprano in musical comedy.  She later acted with John Gielgud in Shakespeare (Lady Macbeth 1942) and in the successful, long-running play Richard of Bordeaux by Gordon Daviot (aka Josephine Tey) in 1934.
