Born Vienna, 26 March 1939.
Austrian conductor.
He studied conducting under Hans Swarowsky at the Vienna Musikakademie. In 1959 he joined the staff at the Landestheater in Salzburg. Subsequent conducting engagements included Heidelberg (from 1961), Düsseldorf (First Conductor from 1968), Mannheim (1985) and Munich (Bavarian State Opera from 1993). He worked regularly at the Vienna State Opera and at Bayreuth, where, since 1981 his repertoire has included The Flying Dutchman, Lohengrin and the Ring.
Particularly known as a conductor of Wagner, his range also includes Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss and Berg, as well as Verdi, Janáček, and Shostakovich.
