Nikolaus Harnoncourt was a hugely versatile musician, conducting a range from Monteverdi to Gershwin and Berg. His reputation was established by the formation of his Viennese group of baroque specialists, the Concentus Musikus, and subsequent restoration of works by Bach and Monteverdi played in period style.
