Johann Baptist Strauss II.
Born Vienna, 25 October 1825.
Died Vienna, 3 June 1899.
Austrian composer and conductor.
Johann Strauss II is the most popular of the many composers of light music centred on Vienna in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Excellent as a handful of his stage works may be, especially the glorious Die Fledermaus, they tend to be uneven, and the most consistent standard of genius is shown in his huge catalogue of orchestral music, largely intended for dancing.
