Alfreda Hodgson Suggest updates

Born Morecambe, 7 June 1940.

Died Morecambe, 16 April 1992.

English mezzo-soprano.

Alfreda Hodgson trained at the Manchester College of Music and was largely a concert performer, particularly renowned for her performances of Bach, Mahler and Elgar. Her successful intenational career included many visits to America and the continent.

She took to opera late and never sang a lot of roles. Her first operatic role, in 1974, was Ulrica A Masked Ball, with ENO, both in London and on tour.  At Covent Garden she appeared in Stravinsky's Song of the Nightingale and Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges. In Scotland she sang Jocasta at the Edinburgh Festival and (in concert) Gluck's Orfeo with the SCO.
