Joel Prieto was brought up in Puerto Rico and studied in New York, at the Manhattan School of Music. He was a member of the Atelier Lyrique at the Opéra National de Paris, and then won the Operalia competition in 2008. He made his debut in 2008 as Tamino at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin.
Performances in Britain include his first appearance with Scottish Opera as Ferrando in 2009. With the Royal Opera (in Berlin) he appeared as Fenton. At the Glyndebourne Festival he sang Belfiore La finta giardiniera, He returned to Scotland in 2016, for Ferrando at the Edinburgh International Festival.
He is particularly known for his Mozart roles. Further performances include Belfiore at the Berlin Staatsoper and Santa Fe, and Don Ottavio in Salzburg and Houston. He has sung Ferrando in Valencia, Washington, Luxembourg, Munich, Barcelona and Spoleto, as well as the 2016 Aix-en-Provence Festival. He also appeared as Tamino in Santiago and Madrid.
Other parts include Donizetti (Ernesto in Rome; Arturo Lucia di Lammermoor at Deutsche Oper, Berlin and Dresden); Gounod (Tybalt at Deutsche Oper, Berlin); Berlioz (Iopas Les Troyens at Deutsche Oper, Berlin); Wagner (Steersman Flying Dutchman at Berlin Staatsoper); Verdi (Fenton in Barcelona and Toulouse); Leoncavallo (Beppe in Santiago) and Strauss (Narraboth at Berlin Staatsoper). Performances of zarzuela include Fernando in Doña Francisquita (by Vives) at Toulouse.
