Christopher Seaman spent most of his career in the USA as principal conductor of several orchestras.
As a child he sang in the choir at Canterbury Cathedral for five years. He won a scholarship to King's School, Canterbury and later to King's College, Cambridge. He then attended the Gulbenkian Foundation Conducting Scheme at the Guildhall School of Music in London.
He was appointed principal timpanist with the London Philharmonic at 22. As a conductor he worked with most of the major British orchestras. In Scotland he was appointed as assistant conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 1968, and later succeeded James Loughran as that orchestra's principal conductor. He also conducted the SNO regularly.
Operatic work included appearances with Scottish Opera. He also conducted the BBC Symphony in a concert performance of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, when the role of Orfeo was sung by Dame Janet Baker.
