Sir David McVicar trained in Glasgow at the RSAMD (now RCS) initially as an actor. He directed and designed several opera productions and worked with Scottish theatre companies. He was knighted in 2012 for services to opera. He has also been appointed by the French Government a Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
He has worked with most of the opera companies in the UK.
Scottish Opera productions since 1996 include Mozart (Idomeneo, Così fan tutte); Verdi (La traviata, Falstaff); Puccini (Madama Butterfly, Il trittico); Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier); Debussy (Pelléas et Mélisande); Stravinsky (The Rake's Progress).
Royal Opera Covent Garden: Mozart (Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte); Berlioz (Les Troyens); Verdi (Rigoletto, Aïda); Strauss (Salome); Cilea (Adriana Lecouvreur); Giordano (Andrea Chenier); Britten (Death in Venice).
ENO: Cherubini (Médée); Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier); Britten (The Rape of Lucretia, The Turn of the Screw).
Glyndebourne: Mozart (Die Entführung aus dem Serail); Wagner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg); Puccini (La bohème).
New York Met: Handel (Giulio Cesare); Cherubini (Medea); Donizetti (Anna Bolena, Maria Sturda, Roberto Devereux); Verdi (Il Trovatore, Don Carlos); Leoncavallo (Pagliacci); Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana); Giordano (Fedora).
He has worked extensively on the continent, including Paris (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées); Strasbourg (Opéra National du Rhin); Aix-en-Provence Festival; Milan (La Scala); Barcelona (Gran Teatro del Liceu); Salzburg Festival; Copenhagen (Royal Danish Opera).
He has also directed at Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, Canadian Opera and Opera Australia.
