Stephen Richardson studied music in Manchester, at the University and with Patrick McGuigan at RNCM. He was the winner of both a Peter Moores Foundation Scholarship and a Countess of Munster Bursary. He appeared on TV in a master class conducted by Sir Geraint Evans in 1982.
Operatic roles at college included Sarastro, Silva (Ernani) and Duke Bluebeard. He sang at the Bowden Festival as Luka (The Bear) and the Abbot (Curlew River). His London debut, also in 1982, was as Sarastro in a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
Appearances with other Britsh companies include WNO (Colline, Grigoris The Greek Passion), Glyndebourne (Where the Wild Things Are and Higglety Pigglety Pop!) and ENO (King Aïda). He also sang many times with Opera North.
He made his first appearance with Scottish Opera as Ferrando (Il trovatore), returning for Johann (Werther), Private Willias (Iolanthe), Lt Ratcliffe (Billy Budd) and Don Fernando (Fidelio).
His first concert work in Scotland in 1983 was the title role in Elijah in Aberdeen.
