Marie Hayward studied in London, with Roy Henderson, Tito Gobbi, and Luigi Ricci, as well as in Vienna, and had a successful career as a lyric-dramatic soprano with the major British companies and in Germany.
In Britain, she sang with Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera, the Royal Opera and English National. She was a frequent guest at the Kiel Opera when its conductor was Klaus Tennstedt, her repertoire there including Donna Anna and Desdemona.
Her concert repertoire was extensive and she appeared with most of the major London orchestras. She can be heard on two of Sir Adrian Boult's Vaughan Williams recordings, the Serenade to Music and The Pilgrim's Progress.
