Born Casalmaggiore, 19 July 1932.
Italian conductor and musicologist.
Giacomo Zani studied in Italy and Paris. His teachers included Antonino Votto and Franco Ferrara.
He was appointed as orchestral director at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo under Gianandrea Gavazzeni. He was then appointed as artistic director at the Teatro del Giglio, Lucca.
As an orchestral conductor he worked with many of the greatest Italian artists. He also worked extensively in Seoul, South Korea.
From 1977 to 2011 he was director of the music publisher Sonzogno. He was in charge of the preparation of new critical editions of several important operas, including Rossini Aureliano in Palmira; Leoncavallo Pagliacci; Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana and Giordano Andrea Chénier.
His operatic recordings include Rossini (Aureliano in Palmira, Il barbiere di Siviglia); Donizetti (L'elisir d'amore); Verdi (Oberto).
