German tenor.
Helmut Melchert trained initially as a pianist before switching to singing, with his early career focussing on concert and oratorio work.
After starting to appear in opera he joined the Hamburg ensemble in 1944, and was seen as a specialist in modern repertoire. His roles included Strauss (Herod, Aegisth); Stravinsky (Oedipus); Hindemith (Albrecht Mathis der Maler); Dallapiccola (Grand Inquisitor Il prigioniero) and Henze (Elector The Prince of Homburg).
