Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi

Born Cremona, 15 May 1567.

Died Venice, 29 November 1643.

Italian composer.

Monteverdi's surviving stage works - three full length operas and two short entertainments - now seem astonishingly modern in outlook. The more they are seen, the more their quality is revealed, and the more tragic it becomes that other works have failed to survive.
