Gaetano Rea.

Born Middlesbrough.

English bass.

Tano Rea was educated on Tees-side and in Italy, where he studied both music and theatre design. After gaining experience singing leading roles with several light entertainment companies, he joined the Scottish Opera Chorus in 1971.

During his eight years with Scottish Opera he used the full form of his name - Gaetano Rea. Small roles he performed include Giuseppe La traviata, Pritschitsch The Merry Widow, the Imperial Commissioner Madama Butterfly and Motel in Fiddler on the Roof. He also created the part of the Young Man in Confessions of a Justified Sinner (Wilson 1976). Other activities include the role of the Lion in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (music John McCabe, text Gerald Larner) with Scottish Opera For All, on an extensive tour of schools.

He later returned to the Edinburgh Festival as a member of the Birmingham Rep company, appearing in Candide and As You Like It, by which time the Tano form of his name had been adopted.

He appears on DVD in the Warner Video series of Gilbert and Sullivan recordings, as Arac in Princess Ida.
