John Stoddart studied at the National School of Opera then appeared with the New Opera Company in two productions at Sadler's Wells - the premiere of A Tale of Two Cities (Arthur Benjamin 1957) and the British premiere of The Government Inspector (Der Revisor Werner Egk 1957).

A season as a principal with the D'Oyly Carte company followed (Nov '59 to July '60), and then a couple of years with Sadler's Wells until 1962. He later appeared in Dublin in 1964, in a production of The Gipsy Baron. Recordings include the Sadler's Wells Carmen highlights, as Remendado, and also a disc of extracts from Ivor Novello's Glamorous Night and Careless Rapture.
