Scottish soprano.
Janis Kelly studied in Glasgow at the RSAMD then in London, at the Royal College of Music. Her early operatic career was largely with Opera Factory, where her roles included both Countess and Susanna, as well as Zerlina, Ottavia in The Coronation of Poppea, Juno in La Calisto and Flora in The Knot Garden.
With Scottish Opera her roles have been Polly in The Threepenny Opera, Rose Maurrant in Street Scene and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, as well as Sarah in James MacMillan's Clemency, which she created at Covent Garden. With ENO she has sung the title roles in Alcina and Offenbach's La belle Vivette, and also Countess Almaviva, Yum Yum, Despina, Iris (Semele), Romilda (Xerxes), Rose Maurrant and Pat Nixon in Nixon in China. Her performance of this last role at the New York Met featured on a live broadcast to cinemas.
At Grange Park she has sung Miss Jessel, Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda and Kuma in The Enchantress (Tchaikovsky). She appeared as Dorabella at Garsington, and with Opera North her extensive appearances include Magnolia Hawks (Show Boat), Serpetta (Mozart's La finta giardiniera), Musetta, Countess Almaviva, Vixen, Marschallin and Magda in La rondine.
