Italian director and designer of theatre, film and opera.
Luchino Visconti is perhaps most remembered now for his many films, including The Leopard and Death in Venice, but he was an important director of opera, a famous Traviata at already accomplished at La Scala with Callas in 1955.
After his Sonnambula was brought to Edinburgh he was quickly engaged to direct several productions at Covent Garden, through to the mid-sxties. most notable, indeed famous, was the 1958 Don Carlos. This was followed up by La sonnambula, Il trovatore, Der Rosenkavalier and La traviata. All these stagings remained in the Opera House's repertoire for many years.
