Josef Wagner studied in Vienna (University for Music and the Performing Arts) with Kurt Equiluz and Robert Holl, and later with Wicus Slabbert. His debut role was Don Alfonso.
He joined the Vienna Volksoper in 2002, where his repertoire included Alidoro, Colline and Philebos (in Zemlinsky's König Kandaules), as well as several Mozart roles - Publio, Masetto, Figaro and Papageno. He also sang Figaro at the Salzburg Landestheater and Guglielmo in Reinsberg. His Salzburg Festival debut was as Don Cassandro (La finta semplice).
Outside Austria he has sung in Berne (Lord Sidney in Il viaggio a Reims and Melitone) and Geneva (Nachtigall, Frank). He has worked with several French companies, including Nantes (Nick Shadow), Dijon (Eduard in Hindemith's Neues vom Tage), and Marseille (Leporello). With the Vlaamse Opera he has performed Melitone, Lord Sidney and Papageno, as well as Assur.
His concert repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, and includes appearances at the Concertgebouw as well as in Vienna's Musikverein and Konzerthaus.
