American tenor.
Allen Cathcart studied music at the University of California. He began his singing career as a baritone, and at the Metropolitan Opera Studio he sang Guglielmo in Così fan tutte.
As a heldentenot, Cathcart sang with most of the major American companies.
European appearances included Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Brussels and Rome. His repertoire included several major Wagner roles including Walther, Siegmund and Siegfried.
Cathcart also sang Florestan (Fidelio), the Drum-Major (Wozzeck) and Dmitri (Boris Godunov). His debut at San Francisco was as Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos.
His work in Britain was with Scottish Opera, with whom he sang six roles, and with Welsh National, where he appeared as Laca and as Hermann in The Queen of Spades.
