Carl Schultz studied music at the University of Southern California, travelling to Stuttgart on a Fulbright Scholarship. As a winner at the Geneva Music Contest he toured and recorded as a soloist with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
His operatic career in Germany began in 1961 and he joined the Hamburg company in the 1965-6 season. As a member of the Hamburg State Opera he performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1968 and 1983. His repertoire included roles by Mozart (Second Armed Man), Verdi (Ferrando, Ramfis), Musorgsky (Pimen) and Strauss (Orest's Tutor).
