Declan McCusker trained in Manchester at the RNCM. On graduation, he moved to Glasgow in 1977 and joined the Scottish Opera Chorus. This remained his long-term base, and he continued to work with the company even after the full-time chorus was disbanded. During those years, he performed a large number of brief solo roles.
