English mezzo-soprano.
Barbara Barnes was born in Hampshire and studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. As a student she sang a series of roles including Juno in La calisto, Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro and Amneris in Aïda. She then spent a season in the Scottish Opera Chorus, singing Third Lady in The Magic Flute before creating the role of Mary Fleming in Mary, Queen of Scots (Thea Musgrave) at the 1977 Edinburgh Festival.
