Rudolf Constantin was born in Paris of a Greek father and Swiss mother. He studied in Zürich, and had engagements in Berne, Graz, Bremen, and Cologne, before joining Frankfurt Municipal Opera in 1968.
He also made guest appearances in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, and Vienna.
His large repertoire included major roles by Mozart (Don Giovanni); Berlioz (Mephistopheles Damnation of Faust); Wagner (Telramund); Verdi (Rigoletto); Busoni (Doktor Faust); Berg (Dr Schön Lulu); Prokofiev (Ruprecht Fiery Angel).
His first appearance in Britain was with the Frankfurt Opera at the Edinburgh Festival in 1970. His London debut was with the Royal Opera in 1973 (Mandryka Arabella).
