Josefa Fernández had a notable career, first singing in London in 1846. She married the French bass-baritone Edouard Gassier (1820-1872), who worked regularly in London between 1855 and 1870, singing Méphistophélès in the British première of Faust (London 1863).

Madame Gassier created the role of Annetta in the Ricci brothers' comic opera Crispino e la comare (Venice 1850). Her later appearances in London, and on tour in Britain, included leading roles in Lucrezia Borgia, Lucia di LammermoorLa traviata and others.
