Planquette's most famous work, Les Cloches de Corneville had a lengthy success in Britain, with performances even by amateur groups well into the twentieth century. Not only were several subsequent pieces premiered in London, but Paul Jones, the English version of Surcouf, was even used as the launch vehicle for Carl Rosa's Light Opera Company - a promising venture cut short by his death. The Old Guard was also a popular touring show for several seasons.
