Born London.
English conductor.
Simon Phipps was a chorister at New College, Oxford, then studied in Cambridge, London and Munich before training as a conductor at the RNCM in Manchester. In 1985 he began to work in Sweden, conducting opera and ballet in Gothenburg and also worked in Germany at Krefeld. He has been based in Sweden since 1994, establishing the Swedish Chamber Choir in 1997, and conducting a wide range of choral and orchestra music with most of the Swedish orchestras. He has also developed an operatic repertoire that ranges from Monteverdi, Mozart and Rossini to Puccini, Britten and Reimann.
His early work in Britain included performances of operetta with the New Sadler's Wells company, the most notable example of which was perhaps a rare revival of Ruddigore that included many sections unperformed since the original run a century before.
