Baritone.
Pavlo Hunka studied modern languages and practised as a lawyer before training in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music. He completed his studies in Basel with Maria Sandulescu.
He began his career in the ensemble at Theater Basel, where he first sang many of the principal bass-baritone roles. His repertoire includes Mozart (Don Alfonso), Weber (Kaspar), Verdi (Falstaff), Wagner (Hunding, Alberich, Wotan), Tchaikovsky (Tomsky), Debussy (Golaud), Strauss (Barak), Bartók (Bluebeard) and Berg (Wozzeck). He has worked at many of the major opera houses, including Paris, Vienna, Munich, Florence, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Madrid and Moscow.
Later appearances include Brussels La Monnaie (Schigolch Lulu, Nekrotzar Le Grand Macabre); Berlin Staatsoper (Kecal, Doctor Wozzeck); Naples (Balstrode) and Palermo(Shishkov From the House of the Dead).
In Britain, he made his ENO debut as Nekrotzar in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre and sang Don Pizarro at the Edinburgh Festival as a member of the Opéra de Lyon.
His recordings include Fidelio and Un ballo in maschera.
He was closely involved in a Ukrainian Art Song Project with the Canadian Opera.
