Scottish conductor.
Richard Lewis was educated in Edinburgh and studied music at Magdalen College, Oxford, before completing a Master's degree at Edinburgh University. There followed a year in London at the National Opera Studio, studying conducting under David Parry.
His first professional appointment was in Germany as repetiteur and conductor at Mannheim. In 2000 he starting working as assistant to Adam Fischer in Austria at the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival, working on operas including L'incontro improvviso and La vera costanza. Subsequent work with Fischer included recordings of several Mozart operas with Danish Radio and a Ring Cycle in Budapest. He also assisted on performances of Così fan tutte at the 2005 Salzburg Festival.
As Musical Director of Edinburgh Grand Opera, he conducted Turandot, Carmen, Aïda, The Saint of Bleecker Street, Nabucco and La traviata. In Glasgow he was Musical Director of Opera on a Shoestring's performances of Carmen and L'elisir d'amore. With Dutch National Opera he was assistant conductor for Lucio Silla. He has also assisted at Scottish Opera for stagings of Macbeth, Eugene Onegin and Lucia di Lammermoor. His debut with English Touring Opera came in their spring 2011 season, conducting a tour of La clemenza di Tito that visited the Perth Festival.
