Born Harrow, Middlesex, 11 July 1961.

English bass.

Alastair Miles was a professional flautist before starting his singing career.  He studied in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at the National Opera Studio.  He won both the John Christie Award (at Glyndebourne) and the Decca Kathleen Ferrier Prize.

In Britain he sang with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden,  Glyndebourne Festival,  English National Opera,  Welsh National Opera and Opera North.  He also appeared at most of the world's great opera houses, including the New York Met,  La Scals Milan,  Vienna State Opera and San Francisco Opera.

He has worked with many British orchestras, including the LSO and Philharmonia.  He also appeared with several of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony,  Dallas Symphony and Royal Concertgebouw.

From early in his career he worked in Scotland, singing many times in concerts at the Edinburgh Festival -  Mozart (Figaro);  Schubert (Mass in E flat);  Donizetti (Raimondo Lucia di Lammermoor);  Verdi (Title role Oberto, Bass solo Requiem); snd Schoenberg (Priest Moses und Aron).  He has also toured to Scotland with both the Glyndebourne Tour and Opera North.

He more recently appeared with Scottish Opera as Arkel Pelléas et Mélisande and Pistola Falstaff.

He features on more than 100 CDs, including Le nozze di Figaro and Lucia di Lammermoor, associated with those Edinburgh performances under Sir Charles Mackerras.
