Rutland Boughton enjoyed a phenomenal success when The Immortal Hour was staged in London in 1922. The work had a continuous run unheard of for an opera.
Nothing else in his output came close to matching that. His music is generally melodious and quite dramatic, by comparison with which The Immortal Hour seems rather bland.
Boughton's attempt to establish a repertoire of operas based on legends reminiscent of Wagner was not successful.
