Italian soprano, later mezzo-soprano.

Elena Zilio enjoyed a notably long career, largely in Italy,  Her early years included a visit to the 1972 Edinburgh Festival in  the 'seconda donna' part, Isoletta, in La straniera by Bellini.  She also appeared as Musetta in La bohème at the Verona Arena the following year,  The lead soprano on both occasions was the great Renata Scotto. Rodolfo at the Arena was Pavarotti.

Half a century later she was brought to Covent Garden by Antonio Pappano to sing such character parts as Mamma Lucia (Cavalleris rusticana) and Madelon (Andrea Chénier).
