A revivnd Carl Rosa company was established in 1998 to keep the famous name alive. Under the direction of Peter Mulloy it has since produced operettas both British (G & S) and continental (Fledermaus and Merry Widow). Standards have generally been high and extensive tours in the UK and abroad have been undertaken.
The company took advantage of the production of Mike Leigh's film Topsy-Turvy to take over the recreated sets and costumes based on the original designs for The Mikado, and it has proved one of their greatest successes. While most of the singers have been operatic in background, several performers from drama and musicals have also appeared with success, notably Victor Spinetti and Gay Soper in The Merry Widow. One or two innovations have proved more controversial, with well-known comics (male and female) going on stage as (respectively) the Mikado and Sergeant of Police.
