Died Bergamo, 2 December 1845.
Italian composer of German origin.
Simone Mayr is one of the most important composers of Italian opera before and during the domination by Rossini. He trained in Bergamo and Venice. As well as being a composer of note he was a famous teacher, his most notable student being Donizetti.
His masterpiece is generally considered to be Medea in Corinto (1814, with a libretto by Romani). Che originali of 1798, was his first international success, and was widely performed in Britain under the title Il fanatico per la musica.
