Oscar Weil's adaptation of The Daughter of the Regiment was introduced by the Carl Rosa company at Bristol on 12 October 1890 - only a few weeks before the first Scottish run. It remained a popular version for several seasons, though it seems to have some radical differences compared with the original. He had earlier translated another Donizetti comedy, L'elisir d'amore.
