Russian mezzo-soprano.
Elena Zhidkova made her debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and was subsequently invited to appear at the Bayreuth Festival as Flosshilde and Schwertleite in Del' Ring des Nibelungen. Since then she has been heard as Waltraute and Brangane at the Teatro Real, Madrid; Dorabella in Cos) fan tutte, Octavian in Der Rosenkovolier and as Fricka in Dos Rheingold and Die WolkOre in Tokyo; Adriano in Rienzi in Leipzig; and at the Semperoper Dresden as Venus in Tatmnauser: She made her Teatro alia Scala Milan debut as Judith in Duke Bluebeard's Castle to great success, a role
which she has since performed in Amsterdam, at the Saito Kinen Festival with Seiji Ozawa, and in London under valery Gergiev (subsequently released on CD), and at the Mariinsky Theatre for which she won the coveted 'Golden Mask' award for best singing actress in Russia.
Further highlights include Kundry in Porsifol (Lyon, Dusseldorf and Mannheim); Marie in Wozzeck
(Moscow); Fricka (Berlin and Geneva); and Venus with Gustavo Dudamel. Recently she made made her debut as Principessa di Bouillon in Francesco Cilea's Adriono Lecouvreur at the Wiener Staastoper. alongside Angela Gheorgiu. Equally in demand on the concert platform, she has performed with numerous conductors including Valery Gergiev, Daniel Harding, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Christoph von Dohnanyi. She also performed in Shostakovich's King Leor and Schumann's Foustszenen with the late Claudio Abbado and appeared during his farewell concert at the Berliner Philharmonie. Elena Zhidkova's future projects include Charlotte in Massenet's Werther in Bilbao, Ortrud in Lohengrin in Oslo and her much-awaited debut as Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlo. She makes her BBC SSO debut tonight.
